A TOEFL Study Schedule for the New TOEFL iBT
Short answer
Since January 2026 the TOEFL iBT is shorter and adaptive, with new task types and a 1 to 6 score scale. A good schedule starts with an official practice test, spends most weeks on the new task types one section at a time, adds full timed tests near the end, and keeps the last few days light.
If you studied for TOEFL a few years ago, or you are using older books, your study schedule needs an update. ETS changed the TOEFL iBT in January 2026: the sections now use new task types, the test adapts to your answers, and scores are reported on a 1 to 6 scale.
This guide explains what changed, how long each section takes now, and how to turn your weeks before the exam into a schedule that practises the test you will actually sit.
Key points
- The current TOEFL iBT has four sections with new task types; allow about two hours in total.
- Scores are reported on a 1 to 6 scale in half bands, with a comparable 0 to 120 score during a transition period.
- Older practice books may describe a format that no longer exists; check task types against ETS.
- Practise the short, fast task types often: they reward speed and accuracy more than long essays.
- Sit at least two full timed practice tests, the last a few days before the exam.
What the TOEFL iBT looks like now
According to the official ETS description of the test content, the TOEFL iBT has four sections: Reading, Listening, Writing and Speaking. ETS asks candidates to allow approximately two hours, there are no scheduled breaks, and because the test adapts, the exact time and number of items can vary.
The section times below are the base times ETS lists. They do not include the directions, which is why the whole appointment is longer than the sum of the sections.
| Section | Items | Base time | Task types |
|---|---|---|---|
| Reading | 50 | about 30 min | Complete the Words; Read in Daily Life; Read an Academic Passage |
| Listening | 47 | about 29 min | Listen and Choose a Response; Listen to a Conversation; Listen to an Announcement; Listen to an Academic Talk |
| Writing | 12 | about 23 min | Build a Sentence; Write an Email; Write for an Academic Discussion |
| Speaking | 11 | about 8 min | Listen and Repeat; Take an Interview |
The 1 to 6 score scale
Each section and the overall score are now reported from 1 to 6 in half bands; the overall score is the average of the four sections. ETS publishes a CEFR comparison in which 4 and 4.5 correspond to B2 and 5 and 5.5 to C1. During a two-year transition, score reports also show a comparable score on the old 0 to 120 scale.
Check which scale your university or employer uses in its requirements. If it still quotes a 0 to 120 score, the ETS comparison table tells you roughly which band to aim for.
How long to prepare
As with any exam, the time you need depends on your gap. If your English is already at the CEFR level your target needs, four to eight weeks of practice with the new task types is a common choice. If you need a whole level more, think in months: Cambridge English estimates about 200 guided learning hours per CEFR level.
Because the test is short, it is tempting to prepare little. But a shorter test leaves less room to recover from a slow start, so timing practice matters even more.
A practical test of your gap is the free official practice test: take it in one sitting, under timed conditions, before you fix your exam date. If your result is already close to the score you need, a short, intensive schedule will do; if it is far off, give yourself more weeks rather than more hours per day.
A six-week TOEFL schedule
The plan below assumes about 7 hours a week. Lengthen the build phase if you have more weeks, and shorten it if you have fewer, but keep the order.
In the build weeks, aim for five shorter sessions rather than one long one. A typical session might be 20 minutes of vocabulary and reading, 20 minutes of listening drills and 30 minutes of writing or speaking. In the timed weeks, each session becomes one full section on the official timing followed by marking.
| Week | Phase | Focus |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Diagnose | Official practice test in one sitting; note the slowest task types |
| 2 to 3 | Build | Vocabulary and grammar; untimed practice on every task type; email and discussion writing |
| 4 | Timed practice | One section per session on the official timings; mark and log every mistake |
| 5 | Mock tests | Two full timed tests a few days apart, each followed by a review session |
| 6 | Taper | Short timed sets, error log, phrase bank; light last two days |

Practising the new task types
Several of the new tasks are short and frequent, so they reward fast, accurate language more than long preparation time. Build them into your daily routine rather than saving them for full tests.
Start each task type untimed until you understand exactly what it asks, then move to timed sets. Keep an error log: for every mistake, note the task type, what you chose and why it was wrong. Reviewing that log weekly is where most of the improvement happens, in line with research on practice testing.
- Complete the Words: read widely and practise spelling of common academic words.
- Listen and Choose a Response: short daily listening drills with everyday spoken English.
- Build a Sentence: practise word order with sentences from your own reading.
- Write an Email and Academic Discussion: write one of each a week, then check tone and organisation.
- Listen and Repeat: shadow short recordings to improve accuracy and rhythm.
- Take an Interview: record answers to common questions and time them.
Mock tests and the final week
Use the free official practice test from ETS for your diagnostic and keep any other full test for your mock weeks. Sit each mock in one go, with a timer and no breaks, because the real test has no scheduled breaks either.
In the final week, shorten sessions. Do one timed set a day on your weakest section, reread your error log, and check the logistics: the appointment time, the ID you registered with, and, for the Home Edition, the room and equipment requirements.
Common mistakes when planning
The most common mistake is preparing for the old format from outdated books. The second is leaving all timed practice to the last week, which shows problems too late to fix. The third is never practising speaking out loud, which is the only way to get used to answering on the clock.
A fourth mistake is ignoring the score requirement itself. Some institutions set a minimum for each section as well as an overall score, so a strong Reading result cannot make up for a weak Speaking one. Find the exact requirement before you plan, and give the sections closest to their minimum the extra time.
Questions
When did the TOEFL iBT format change?
ETS introduced the current format and the 1 to 6 score scale in January 2026, with a comparable 0 to 120 score reported during a two-year transition. Check the ETS website for the latest details before you book.
How long is the TOEFL iBT now?
ETS asks candidates to allow approximately two hours. The base section times add up to about 90 minutes; directions and the adaptive design account for the rest.
Are old TOEFL practice books still useful?
For general academic English, yes. For task types and timing, no: books written for the format before 2026 practise tasks that are no longer on the test. Use ETS’s current materials for anything format-specific.
What TOEFL score do I need for a C1 requirement?
On the ETS CEFR comparison, 5 and 5.5 correspond to C1. Always check the exact requirement of your university or employer, including any minimum per section.
How many practice tests should I take?
Three is a good number for most schedules: one at the start as a diagnostic and two in the final phase, a few days apart, the last one at least three days before your exam.
Is the TOEFL iBT Home Edition the same test?
ETS describes the Home Edition as the same test taken at home with a live human proctor. The content and scoring are the same, but there are extra rules for your room and equipment, so read them well before your test day.
